No war, hunger, death, want, sorrow or pain. How would you like to live in such a society? Jonas, in Lois Lowry's The Giver, lives in such a community. As Jonas turns twelve, he is assigned the job of Receiver of Memories. Through his training he learns many things that his fellow residents have never known or experienced. This knowledge causes Jonas to make some difficult decisions which will effect his entire community.
As you read The Giver, look closely at the way the society is organized. What are people allowed to do? What things do they have no controll over? Lowry present the concept of an utopian society. Ask yourself, what are the advantages and disadvantages of such a society?
